100 Movies..one down, The Bicycle Thief

For whatever reason, I haven’t seen a lot of movies in my life. Too often I have found myself missing the subtle and not subtle references made to movies. “You know…that scene in The Godfather…when..(insert any scene from The Godfather).”

No…I don’t know that scene from The Godfather, or Annie Hall, or The Shawshank Redemption. I haven’t seen those movies and a whole lot more. I did once go through a “slow disturbing foreign film phase,” and saw more films in that genre than I care to remember which is actually true because my recall for movie details is poor.

So tonight, I downloaded a list from Yahoo with 100 movies to see before I die. and I got started right away. My first choice was The Bicycle Thief, black and white Italian film from 1948. I had always heard this was a great movie but truth be told I wasn’t sold on it initially. In fact during the first third of the film I asked my husband why this was considered a great movie. He said he wasn’t sure and that he himself had started watching it, but didn’t finish it.

Determined, I stuck with it. And was so glad I did. A great movie!! A really great movie. A simple story about a man who gets a job during a time when jobs are scarce. His job requires a bicycle and his family has to sell some personal items to get his bike. The bike is then stolen on his first day on the job. He spends the rest of movie looking for the bike with his young son. The story is heartbreaking, the main actors, especially the young son, are incredible. Great great movie…if you haven’t seen it..it’s a must.
